Ellon optician and
Three Peaks Member, Tracey Sahraie represented Great Britain
in her age
group at the European Duathlon
Championships in Nancy, France on 2nd May.
She qualified for a place in the team at the Scottish National
DuathlonChampionships which took place in Stirling in March.
Duathlon consists of a run followed by a cycle and then another
run. The races can be varying distances with the Championships
consisting of a 10km run, 40km bike and finishing with a 5km
run.

"Finished
with an overall pb of 10 mins in 2 hrs 25 with a pb of 45'50
for the 10k and 1hr 11'30 for the bike despite torrential rain,
hail, wind and then lots of surface water. Transitions were long
and lost it a bit for the last run but I was glad to finish in
one piece."

Race report
to follow but just a quick note to say I managed to qualify
for Team GB for the European Duathlon Championships in France
in May :-D
My time was also within the margins for qualifying for the World Championships
in Edinburgh in September but I won't know for definite whether I have
a place until May, so fingers crossed.
Race report
from Arash
Conditions: Early race start, 9:30am. Morning was cold (3 degrees)
expected to raise to 7 by midday. 20mph westerly wind gusting
to 34-36 throughout the day.
First run:
(10K) was 4 laps, second run 2 laps. One third to half of each
lap on soft ground, the rest on pavement/road. At
the start, after some 200 yards, there was a short steep incline
(called “the beast”). In the early laps this was
easy to climb, but in later stages, particularly after the bike
session, it got harder. Due to soft ground and a hilly course,
I expected PB+3min, this was the same for most people as shown
in the final results. Tried to keep up with Wilbur for the first
2-3 laps, start of the forth lap knee started to hurt, but managed
to leave transition around 45min mark. I was very pleased with
the time considering I had planed for a long transition to have
a gel and drink.
Bike: Had driven the route 3 times the day before. This was
a fantastic route. 2 laps of around 20K, flat as a pancake, 10
K back to the wind, 10K straight into the gusty wind. I ran out
of gears whilst going back to the wind, speeds around 30mph stopping
a couple of times around the roundabouts for the oncoming traffic,
otherwise very easy. Onto the gusty wind, down to 10mph. Overall
held my position in the field. Marshals were wonderful, very
encouraging. Took two gels on the bike, got back to transitions
just under 2 hours. So far it was all going to the plan, averaging
over 20mph on the bike (thank you Colin, bike was smooth).
Last run
(5K): Here things didn’t go to the plan. Cramp
set in at the beginning, passing “ Beast” first time
around, knee started to hurt, stopped running before the end
of the first lap. Rather than pulling out of the race, decided
to walk it to the end. The last lap was very painful. I gently
walked around the course! Saw Wilbur and Tracey on the lap. They
were both going strong. Natasha Moir and Kevin Adam were amongst
the 70 others who passed me on the last run. Finished with a
new record of over 32min for a 5K!
Overall, did the race at 2:32, which was ok. This is a fantastic
race, I fully recommend it and hope to do it next year without
the injury. Thanks to the kids who were wonderful and spent all
that time in the cold supporting us, and Aude for kind words
throughout the race.
Triathlon
Scotland Club Ranking
Three Peaks
came 11th out of 34 in the 2009 club rankings, not bad as only
8 club members contributed to this (one of them being me -
Lindsay!) so just think where we could be at the end of this
year if everyone racing counts. To count you must have a valid
race
licence
purchased before 31st May, this will also save you money on
race entries and give you insurance - check out the Triathlon
scotland web site.
